Butt Welder

GP-3 Wide-Range Ceramic Fusion Butt Welder for Stranded Copper & Aluminum 20–4 AWG

The GP-3 is the broadest-range model in Micro Weld’s GP Ceramic Fusion Series, covering stranded copper and aluminum from 20 AWG through 4 AWG in a single machine — a span that overlaps the GP-1 and GP-2 ranges entirely. For operations running a wide variety of conductor sizes through one station, the GP-3 eliminates the need to size precisely to a narrower model. It delivers the same ceramic fusion architecture found across the GP series — ceramic sleeve flash containment producing a burr-free joint without post-weld grinding — paired with 99-step SCR heat control for fine adjustment across the full range. At 240V or 480V single phase and up to 66A max draw, it’s built for production environments with the electrical infrastructure to match.

Applications

Splicing a wide range of stranded copper conductor sizes — from fine 20 AWG through heavy 4 AWG — at a single in-line joining station on multi-gauge wire and cable production lines

Joining stranded aluminum conductor across a broad AWG range on flexible manufacturing lines that run building wire, control cable, and power distribution conductor through the same equipment

Welding stranded conductor where coil-to-coil joins across multiple gauges are common and operators need one machine that handles the full production mix without re-tooling or model swaps

Rejoining stranded copper or aluminum conductor on pay-off stands, stranders, or take-up equipment where the incoming gauge varies by order and a wide-range welder avoids dedicated setups per size

Real-World Benefits

  • 20–4 AWG range in a single machine covers the full span of the GP-1 and GP-2 combined, giving operations with varied conductor sizes one station instead of two and reducing both capital cost and floor space.
  • 99-step SCR heat control provides the resolution needed to weld cleanly across the entire 20–4 AWG range — from fine stranded conductor where heat precision is critical to heavier gauge where sustained current is required.
  • Ceramic sleeve flash containment produces a burr-free, finished joint at every point in the AWG range — protecting insulating tooling, preventing downstream finishing steps, and maintaining consistent conductor geometry.
  • 240V/480V dual-voltage input matches standard heavy industrial plant power and supports facilities that run mixed voltage infrastructure across their production floor.
  • Hand-operated clamps with spring mechanical upset keep the machine air-free across its full operating range, simplifying installation and reducing maintenance overhead even at the higher current demands of 4 AWG conductor.

Comparison to Similar Models

The GP-3 is the widest-range model in the GP Ceramic Fusion Series before the HP-1.1. Its 20–4 AWG span fully covers the GP-1 (20–8 AWG) and GP-2 (12–4 AWG) ranges, making it the natural choice when a single machine needs to handle conductor sizes that would otherwise require two separate models. The trade-off is voltage: the GP-3 requires 240V or 480V, where the GP-1 can run on 120V. The GP-0 handles the finest gauges below 20 AWG, and the HP-1.1 takes over for stranded conductor above the 4 AWG ceiling.

If your operation runs a consistent, narrow AWG range, a lower GP model sized to that range may be more cost-efficient. If your gauge mix is broad or unpredictable, the GP-3 is the right answer.

Wire and cable producers, flexible manufacturing operations, and multi-gauge production lines joining stranded copper or aluminum across a wide 20–4 AWG range who need a single ceramic fusion welder that eliminates the need to size by conductor gauge.
